Instead of HFC’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Kerala has chosen a 3-4-3 formation. With both teams engaged in a mid-field brawl, the game has gotten off to a slow start. Despite having more possession of the ball, Hyderabad FC has not yet produced anything noteworthy. The opening half of the game got off to a slow start as both teams tried to find their footing by throwing the ball around in the midfield. Both teams were able to produce a few chances as their confidence increased, but the match remained scoreless. Although HFC had better possession of the ball in the opening frame, Borja Herrera’s left-footed finish gave them the lead. Hyderabad FC appeared to be the more promising of the two teams as they had more of the ball and scored the game’s opening goal through Borja Herrera’s deft strike in the 29th minute.
Soon after, Joel Chianese also managed to beat the goalkeeper, but it was determined that he was offside. When under attack, KBFC shown unease at the back and made more attempts to keep their formation than to press hard. The visitors did manage to score again six minutes later, but it was called offside. As a result, HFC went into halftime with a slim lead of one goal. Both teams made much better starts in the second half, but neither KBFC nor HFC were able to score immediately away.
KBFC had more possession of the ball despite being down a goal, but their play in the final third lacked quality. HFC had a fantastic opportunity to put the game away with just over 4 minutes left, but Aaren D’Silva’s header flew over the crossbar. The first-half goal from Borja Herrera was sufficient for HFC to earn all three points this evening, so that miss did not turn out to be costly. HFC will therefore want to carry this winning energy into their semi-final match. The hosts, KBFC, on the other hand, will be a little dissatisfied with this outcome and will now turn their attention to their knockout match against Bengaluru FC.
