The match started on a positive note for the hosts. Kerala Blasters FC was desperate to get the opening goal. East Bengal showcased their character by showing their aggressive nature in the opening few minutes of the match. However, Kerala Blasters turned the tide in their favor and launched barrages of attacks.
Poor finishing from the hosts saw the game head into a goalless half. In the meantime, East Bengal resorted to its traditional counterattack playing style. It was Adrian Luna who broke the deadlock with a stunning goal. A long pass from center-back Harmanjot Khabra fell beautifully in the path of Luna who blasted the ball into the back of the net to score the first goal of the new season.
