Karthik Waugh Verbal Duel:

Dinesh Karthik: “I’m coming in early to make a prediction, I strongly feel India will bat once and only once in this Test match,” Dinesh Karthik said on the commentary after India bowled Australia out for 177.

Mark Waugh: We’ll see about that DK, we’ll see about that.”

Dinesh Karthik: “Mark my words Mark.”

Mark Waugh gave a rebuttal: What time is it? It’s five past three. I’ll write that in my diary. He could be right. It’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be a stroll in the park.”

Dinesh Karthik: But at the same time, it’s not as tough as the Aussie batters made it out to be either.

Mark Waugh: All I’m saying is never judge a pitch until two sides have bat. Let’s see how things unfold. It’s a big session, Australia won’t let India get away. This Indian Test batters not as good as some of the Australians. I can’t see two guys averaging 60.

Dinesh Karthik: Well there was just one there in India, that averaged 60.

For those who missed out, Mark Waugh made an outlandish prediction during India Tour of Australia in 2020-21. After India were bundled out for 36 in Adelaide, Waugh claimed that the Indian side would lose 0-4, especially with Virat Kohli returning home.

However, Ravi Shastri-coached side did the unthinkable despite injuries to Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin. India won the series 2-1 with Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur scripting a famous win at the Gabba.

Ravi Shastri who was sharing the commentary duty in Nagpur did not hold back. He took a dig at Mark Waugh reminding him about the prediction.

“I remember a prediction he made when we were 36 all out in Adelaide in Australia when he said ‘India will get hammered 4-0’. Keep predicting Mark!” Shastri said.

Waugh was quick to give a rebuttal, saying “I probably wasn’t the only one predicting that though. I can’t actually remember that prediction either Ravi just quietly. I don’t remember myself saying that.”

At end of Day 1 in Nagpur, India were on top. Ravindra Jadeja bagged a fifer on return following five-month injury layoff. India bowled Australia out for 177. In reply, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul added 76 runs for the opening wicket before the vice-captain departed. India were 77/1. Rohit Sharma slammed a half-century.
