The psychiatry expert who gave evidence to the FA’s regulatory commission claimed that Toney had a gambling addiction. They reduced an 11-month sanction by three months.

FA regulatory Commission also handed all documents of Ivan Toney to his club Brentford. In their fresh report, there is no evidence to suggest that the Bees striker was ever involved in influencing the outcome of a match.

The documents read: “The present case is not one of match-fixing. If it was, the charges would have been pursued under different provisions. There is no evidence that Mr Toney did or was even in a position to influence his own team to lose when he placed bets against them winning – he was not in the squad or eligible to play at the time.”

The document adds: “The commission finds that a significant reduction should be made to reflect the diagnosed gambling addiction identified by [psychiatrist] Dr [Philip] Hopley. The lack of control the player has in respect of gambling is clearly a reflection of his diagnosed gambling addiction.”

FA also release reasons for Ivan Toney’s betting breaches. According to them, the 27-year-old striker made 16 bets on his own team to win 15 different games. He made 13 bets to lose in 7 different matches. Meanwhile, in all 13 bets, he was not part of the game as a player.

The FA wanted to impose a 15-month ban on Englishman because he attempted to conceal his betting, knowing it was against FA rules. However, it was reduced to eight months. He will be seen on the field in January 2024.
