ISL Broadcasting RIGHTS: STAR SPORTS to EXIT, Reliance-backed Viacom18 ready to TAKEOVER ISL Media Rights from NEXT SEASON: Follow LIVE Updates

ISL Broadcasting Rights Fiasco at a glance:

  • Star Sports has suffered because of ISL’s dwindling viewership.
  • Star Sports, one of the league’s owners, initially agreed to a 10-year contract.
  • The contract is about to expire, and Reliance-backed Viacom18 will take over.
  • In addition, FSDL, a Reliance subsidiary, controls 65% of ISL.
  • Viacom is actively establishing itself in the sports broadcasting sector.
  • They paid a staggering Rs 23,758 crore for the numbers rights for the next IPL season.
  • Star Sports, the former owner of the digital rights, was only able to retain its broadcast rights.
  • The FIFA World Cup 2022, the Olympics in 2024, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 were also previously secured by Viacom18.

Since the tournament’s inception, Star Network has held the broadcasting rights. Viacom 18, who owns the same company as FSDL and is gaining in popularity, wants to acquire the broadcasting rights independently.

Star Sports has suffered because of the present business model, though. Star could leave when their contract expires due to declining ratings over the past few of seasons. Viacom18, the broadcasting juggernaut funded by Reliance, is poised to strike. In addition, the FSDL is a Reliance subsidiary.

No India vs Pakistan Cricket match but Football, Hockey, Bridge continue to flourish

Simply put, neither clubs nor event planners make a profit. Keeping the ISL broadcasting rights off the market exacerbates the situation. The cost of IPL, Pro Kabaddi, and other rights is skyrocketing. Domestic sports properties in India are witnessing an amazing bull run as more corporations, including Amazon, enter the broadcast industry.

Sports18 is the greatest method to address its present broadcasting issues. Because it has the potential to become a more substantial broadcasting partner. It has the potential to have a greater influence on the whole Indian football business when combined with its internet streaming service (Voot and/or Jio TV). It will serve as a springboard for future ISL expansion.
