Former Indian national team coach Stephen Constantine took over as East Bengal manager this year. The Englishman is going to coach an Indian Club for the first time. The club underwent yet another summer makeover. However, the Red & Golds have enhanced their squad this time around with the signings of top foreigners Ivan Gonzalez, Cleiton Silva, and Alex Lima.

Among the promising domestic prospects signed by the new management are Mobashir Rahman, Aniket Jadhav, VP Suhair, and Lalchungnunga. With these additions, East Bengal has indicated their intent to recover from the disasters of the previous two seasons in India’s top flight, and the game against Mumbai City FC was a prime example of it, with the team defeating the Islanders 5-4 and displaying a lot of character on the field.

East Bengal appeared to have gotten off to a better start than last season, with the players receiving a proper pre-season that included a tournament. This allowed the players to improve team coordination and communication, which were severely lacking in the previous season’s performances.

JERRY LALRINZUALA

Jerry, the youngest goal-scorer for Chennaiyin FC and an emerging player in the ISL in 2016, was given the opportunity to train with FC Metz in France after previously representing the AIFF Elite Academy. After six seasons with the two-time champions, the defender has parted ways with them.

His consistent performances earned him an indelible place in Marina Machans’ fans’ hearts. Last season, the defender demonstrated why he is indispensable, recording 56 tackles, 20 blocks, and two assists in 20 appearances. Now it’s up to Jerry to win the hearts of the millions of East Bengals fans.

SOUVIK CHAKRABARTI

Souvik, a talented graduate of Mohun Bagan Academy, is a true Mariner at heart. After three memorable seasons with Hyderabad, including a championship with the Nizams last season, he has returned to Kolkata and signed a three-year contract with East Bengal.

VP SUHAIR

In 2020, the Palakkad-born striker won the I-League with Mohun Bagan under Kibu Vicuna. In 2017, he scored a hat-trick and some fantastic goals for East Bengal in the Calcutta Football League. He signed with ISL club NorthEast United for the 2020-21 season.

He was a standout performer for the Highlanders over the last two seasons. Suhair finished the 2021-22 season with four goals and two assists for the Highlanders. The 30-year-old Indian striker decided to return to East Bengal for a large sum of money. He agreed to a three-year contract that will keep him in the Red and Gold brigade until 2025.

CLEITON SILVA

In 37 appearances over the last two seasons, the diminutive Brazilian scored 16 goals and provided seven assists for Bengaluru FC. The Brazilian attacker has the excellent one-touch ability and can also set up other attackers. He was the Thai Premier League’s top scorer twice (in 2012 and 2016). Cleiton was also named Thai Premier League Player of the Month and Striker of the Year in 2013 for becoming the league’s first overseas player to score 100 goals. The former Bengaluru striker will now be crucial for the Kolkata club due to his quality and ability.
