Carlos Pena was an important member of the FC Goa squad that won the inaugural ISL League Winners’ Shield and the Super Cup in 2019/20. At the end of his career, the former Barcelona player joined FC Goa in 2018. After two memorable seasons with the Gaurs, he announced his retirement from professional football in 2020.
Pena managed to win the UEFA European U-19 championship in 2002 and was a key member of the FIFA U-20 World Cup runner-up team in 2003. With his coaching experience, Carlos Pena may face a difficult task in reviving FC Goa. But his knowledge of Indian football will undoubtedly keep him ahead of the other debutant managers.

FC Goa went for a re-evaluation of the squad as they brought in a plethora of foreigners including Alvaro Vasquez from Kerala Blasters to deal with their attack woes. Iker Guarrotxena, Marc Valiente, and versatile Moroccan footballer Noah Sadaoui were also brought in to aid the process.
