IPL 2023: MS Dhoni – Sunil Gavaskar feels Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni’s ability to rise under pressure is what makes him stand out from the rest. The former cricketer heaped praise on Dhoni for winning the IPL Trophy in 2018 despite CSK coming after a suspension of two years. Dhoni-led CSK were also ridiculed for including 30-plus players in the team. The wicketkeeper-batter though proved the doubters wrong and went on to have a terrific campaign with bat and as a leader to help CSK win the fourth title. “I think when CSK returned and won the IPL trophy, it was absolutely amazing because the team had not been together for two years, and they had moved out with different franchises, and suddenly they come back again.
Gavaskar further opined that Dhoni’s character is his biggest strength, and he backs players in all situations. CSK’s team spirit shined brightly in the 2018 edition of IPL, with each players contributing in all games.
“That tells you leadership. That tells you how the man could get a team together again after that gap. Sometimes you know, first year, second year there is a team spirit that happens, but to get all of them together after the gap is remarkable,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports Network.
Why Gavaskar is impressed with Dhoni’s leadership qualities?
· Dhoni does not believe in chopping and changing and sticks to the same set of players.
· It is the solid backing the wicketkeeper gives to players that pushes them to do well.
· The CSK skipper remains unperturbed in all situations and believes that is his biggest strength as he can think clearly.
· Dhoni also takes more responsibility when CSK are under pressure and aims to give the best all the time.
“We were used to seeing that from Dhoni, but even those little touches of his where he makes a fielder, a player feel 7 feet tall, are the touches that make him stand out from the other,” said Gavaskar.
Dhoni will yet again lead CSK in the 16th season of IPL. The four-time champions will kick off the T20 tournament by playing a match against Gujarat Titans on March 31.
