IPL 2023: IPL Player Draft? – Despite a successful IPL 2023 mini-auction, the IPL Franchises are keen to do away with the Mini-auctions altogether. Seeking an alternative, the 10 teams have suggested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to conduct a player draft instead. As per the proposal sent to the BCCI, the mega Auction should only continue as per the official schedule, i.e every 3 years.  Follow IPL 2023 updates with InsideSport.IN.

The reason? The exorbitant price tags. Sam Curran went for 18.5 Cr, Cameron Green bagged 17.5 Cr while Ben Stokes and Harry Brook bagged 16.25 Cr and 13.25 Cr respectively. Nicholas Pooran joined Lucknow Super Giants for 16 crores. Rajasthan Royals were in a situation when they could have gone broke going for Harry Brook. But at no point were RR informed of the situation. While SRH picking up Brook for 13.25 Cr prevented the situation, franchises are not happy with the situation.

In a bid to stop the IPL franchises to spend the majority of their auction budget on these star foreign players, the franchises want BCCI to introduce the player draft.

As per the normal norms of the Indian Premier League, a mega auction is held every 3 years. This allows the teams to retain a maximum of 4 players, thereby allowing the squads to get refreshed. The introduction of the player draft will see proper slab prices for the players, restricting the spending of excessive money on a particular player.

Another major cause of worry for the Franchises has been the tricks introduced by the player agents. Catching up to the scheme where selected players can go for a sky-high price in the mini-auction in comparison to the mega auction where there is an even playing field, the agents often forgo entering their players in the mega auctions.

Though the BCCI is yet to take a decision regarding the suggestion from the IPL franchises. The apex Cricketing body of the country has a year in their hand to make the call. IPL 2023 is scheduled to kickstart in the 1st week of April. Should the player draft be introduced for IPL 2024 will be a decision for BCCI to ponder. As for IPL 2025, concluding the three-year cycle, there will be a mega auction.
