IPL 2023 – IPL Owners in Foreign Leagues: The world’s richest cricket board BCCI is getting concerned about the growing interest of IPL team owners in the foreign leagues. Be it the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants or others – all are on buying spree in the foreign leagues. In order to protect their interest, BCCI is unlikely to change the status of ban on Indian players playing in these foreign leagues.
“BCCI has created a brand IPL and the entire sporting world is in awe of it. We have to protect our brand. We are very concerned when the name of IPL owners is being associated with every foreign league.
“They are free to invest wherever they want but we will not allow any kind brand leveraging on account of IPL”, said upset BCCI official.

IPL Owners in Foreign Leagues – Why is BCCI Concerned? Be it the UAE’s ILT20, Cricket South Africa’s T20 league or Caribbean Premier League, IPL Owners are prominent buyers of teams in these leagues.
- Caribbean Premier League: 3 Out of 5 owners are IPL Team owners i.e Rajasthan ROYALS, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders
- ILT20 League: KKR, MI, Delhi Capitals owners have taken teams in league promoted by the Emirates Cricket Board
- CSA T20 League: All 6 teams in the league are owned by IPL Team owners.
BCCI is flooded with requests from various boards and players to allow non-contracted Indian players to play in these leagues. But the Indian board is unlikely to relent.
The BCCI has so far restricted their players’ participation in other leagues and the status quo on the subject is set to continue.
Not only the BCCI but some of the other boards are also fighting hard to protect their DOMESTIC products.
Cricket Australia refuses NOC to their cricketers: The amount of money which was on offer for the players in the ILT20 had sent several cricket boards into a tizzy. Cricket Australia is one of them.
Chris Lynn has signed for the ILT20 and has already landed himself in trouble. Cricket Australia has stated that it won’t consider issuing the mandatory No Objection Certificate to the opener.
PCB, BCB refuses NOC’s for ILT20: Pakistan Cricket Board has also refused to release their players for ILT20 and CSAT20 League. Bangladesh Cricket Board is also following the suit in order to protect their interests.
NewZealand Cricket also under fire: NZC’s premier contracted player Trent Boult decided to walk out of his contract. The official reason given is that he wants to spend time with the family. But the cricket fraternity is buzzed with the fact that Boult along with the IPL wants to ply his trade with the two new upcoming leagues.
The market forces are determining a cricketer’s career now a days. The exodus to the franchise leagues is not just limited to the West Indies or NewZealand. South Africa’s Quinton de Kock and England’s Ben Stokes have surrendered one of the formats with the hope of extending their spans elsewhere.
