The seasoned auctioneer Edmeades took a long flight from London via Dubai and arrived in Kochi on Wednesday morning.
BCCI has booked two floors of the Grand Hyatt in Bolgatty island in Kochi for IPL Auction 2023. The mini-auction will be a 7-hour affair with an hour of break in between on Friday.
In 2018, Edmeades succeeded Richard Madley as the IPL auction host, a position he has held ever since. On the first day of the mega-auction in Bengaluru in February of this year, he passed out in the ballroom of the ITC Gardenia hotel from “postural hypotension.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers then asked Charu Sharma to step in for Edmeades while the medical team attended to him.
The teams and BCCI officials applauded loudly and gave Edmeades a standing ovation when he returned to lead the auction’s final phase. There were doubts, nevertheless, as to whether the Board would hire him again to conduct the auction. However, the Indian cricket board opted to keep Edmeades on.

Who is Hugh Edmeades?
Hugh is a British international fine art, classic car and charity auctioneer. In a 35-year career as a Christie’s auctioneer, he conducted more than 2,500 auctions, selling over 310,000 lots for a sum in excess of £2.7 billion.
Hugh has sold a variety of objects, such as Old Master, Impressionist and Contemporary paintings, exquisite furniture, Chinese pottery, works of art, and memorabilia from the movie and sports industries. Hugh auctioned many pieces when he was at Christie’s, including those from the late Elizabeth Taylor and H.R.H. the late Princess Margaret.
He held an auction in 2004 for 88 guitars owned by Eric Clapton, raising a total of $7,438,624. Other intriguing and unexpected highlights have been the sale of Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB10 from the James Bond movie ‘Spectre’ for $2,434,500 in February 2016 and Audrey Hepburn’s “little black dress” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s for £467,000 in December 2006.

He left his full-time position at Christie’s in 2016 to work as a freelance auctioneer. Hugh has now had the chance to hold more charity auctions, share his expertise with other auction houses, and put into practise his training programme for both seasoned and inexperienced auctioneers.
Hugh was chosen by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in December 2018 to serve as the auctioneer for the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL), and he has continued to do so to this day.
