In a revealing interview with UK publication The Mirror, Chris Gayle has hit out at the IPL for ‘not treating him properly’ despite his contributions to the league over the years. The Jamaican added that he opted out of the auctions for the same reason, but hasn’t called time on his career despite being well into his 40s.

Gayle said, “For the last couple of years, the way the IPL went about, I felt like I wasn’t treated properly. So I thought ‘okay, you (Gayle) didn’t get the respect you deserved after you did so much for the sport and IPL.’ So I said ‘okay, that’s it, I’m not going to bother to enter the draft,’ so I left it as it is. There is always going to life after cricket so I’m just trying to adapt to normality.”

Gayle spent the last four seasons with the Punjab Kings, after being released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore despite being prolific for them for five seasons. Gayle did not feature regularly for his last franchise and dropped down to No.3 from his preferred opening slot. The 43-year-old West Indian has the most sixes in the history of the competition and also boasts a world record 175, the highest score in T20 cricket.

Despite his disappointment, Gayle vowed to return to the IPL next season expressing his desire to win the title, one of the few silverware missing from his glittering CV. The West Indian said, “Next year I’m coming back, they need me! ’ve represented three teams in the IPL, Kolkata, RCB and Punjab. Between RCB and Punjab, I would love to get a title, with one of those two teams. I had a great stint with RCB where I was more successful within the IPL and Punjab, they’ve been good. I love to explore and I love challenges so let’s see what happens.”
