“Abdul bhai, aapke bete ne kamaal kar diya, 3 wicket liye ek over mein,” Abdul Rashid was greeted by the other sellers. He was taken aback but when his phone soon started ringing, he realised his son had made him proud.
But after learning what his son had done, Rashid received Umran’s call after the match.
“Before Umran could say anything, I said -‘son you have made me proud today’,” Rashid was quoted saying by TOI.

Umran Malik returned with three wickets in the 20th over against Punjab Kings, bowling precise yorkers that even forced Dale Steyn to jump out of his seat. It was a unique feat from the fast bowler, who has clocked 150kph+ regularly to stun everyone.
In that final over, he did not give away a single run and bagged three wickets, becoming only the third bowler in IPL history to do so.

“Umran has made me popular in the market and in fact in Jammu overall. Everyone greets me saying ‘adaab’ in the market. I am really proud of my son,” Abdul Rashid told TOI.
Umran Malik was spotted by Sunrisers Hyderabad scouts and was picked as a net bowler back in 2016. During the period, Irfan Pathan played an important role in shaping him. After Pathan joined Jammu & Kashmir as the head coach cum player, he worked on his bowling action and guided Umran.
“I am really thankful to Abdul (Samad) who took him to Irfan (Pathan) sir. Irfan sir has played a big role. He is the one who gave him wings,” Rashid said.
“I remember Irfan sir’s words. He said Umran’s bowling action looks similar to that of Waqar Younis. He said Umran has a bright future and all he needs is a platform to showcase his talent. And he (Irfan) began guiding Umran,” Rashid added.

But it was last year that he made his IPL debut against KKR after T Natarajan was ruled out with Covid-19.
The Kashmiri fast bowler became an instant hit, clocking 150kph upward on a regular basis. Now, under Dale Steyn’s guidance, he has been flourishing. Yorker has become his latest weapon in the arsenal.
“My only dream now is to see my son in an Indian team jersey. I want him to play in the World Cup some day. I am sure he will. He has reached this level and I am confident he will get there very soon. He will make the entire country proud,” Rashid said.
