Even though BCCI had zeroed in on March 27 as the start date, following a request from broadcast partner Star, the Indian board decided to advance the date to March 26. The reason for that is the weekend. As IPL has always begun with one match on an opening day, BCCI wants to keep the tradition intact.

The star wants to cash in on the Sunday with a double-header and as March 27 is a Sunday, three matches will be completed by the second day of the tournament.

A decision on shifting to Ahmedabad for playoffs will be made later depending on Covid situation

“We are yet to finalise the venues. So far, three stadiums in Mumbai and one in Pune have been finalised. But a shift to Ahmedabad will only happen for the playoff phase if the Covid situation is negligible. We don’t want to risk the integrity of the bio-bubble as staging in Ahmedabad will require air travel,” the BCCI official said.

Hence, one can expect the BCCI to withhold playoff fixtures for now as the board wants to play the waiting game before confirming Ahmedabad as playoff venue.
