On Sunday, Sharma’s SRH took on Ravindra Jadeja’s CSK at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy. Hyderabad bowled first and conceded 154 runs, while in the run chase, the 21-year-old played an excellent knock of 75 runs from 50 deliveries to give his team their first win of the season.

Besides that, the lad from Amritsar also fulfilled the promise that he made to his mentor Yuvraj Singh, of catching up to Shubman Gill’s level. Gill had played a blistering knock of 96 runs against Punjab Kings a day before, and Yuvraj had asked Abhishek to produce something similar. Notably, both Shubman and Abhishek are teammates from Punjab, who consider Yuvraj Singh as their idol.

“Yuvi paaji is like a mentor and a big brother to me, and I always speak to him when I feel low. Luckily, he is always there for me and has been very supportive throughout my journey. After Shubman’s knock (against PBKS), he wanted me to catch him (Shubman Gill). This innings is dedicated to Yuvi paaji,” Sharma said after the match.

Meanwhile, Sharma has also revealed that the pressure was huge after two back-to-back subpar outings, given that SRH have backed him as their opening batter. “It was a pressure game for the whole team and me as well as we didn’t do well in the first two games. I am pretty much lucky to have a team like SRH because they’ve been very supportive through this journey. I was just waiting for an innings like this,” he elaborated.
