Hyderabad’s seemingly strange strategies at the auction table left many scratching their heads, as they spent heavily on players who have not proved their mettle in the IPL. They have signed Nicholas Pooran for INR 10.75 crore despite his poor performance for Punjab Kings, while an inexperienced Romario Shepherd was signed for a hefty sum of INR 7.75 crore.

SRH at IPL 2022 Auction : Hyderabad also bought Abhishek Sharma, a former Sunrisers player who has not particularly been impressive over the last years, for INR 6.50 crore. While this decision initially seemed incomprehensible, Muralitharan debunked the reason by stating that Sharma will be used as an opener alongside skipper Kane Williamson in the upcoming season.
“Abhishek (Sharma) was pretty much part of our initial plans. He was in and out of the side last season, but we want him to assume greater responsibility this time. We want him to open the batting alongside Kane. That will help us get a good left-hand, right-hand combination at the top,” the former Sri Lankan bowler told to Sportskeeda.
He further went on to explain Hyderabad’s batting-order plans by stating “Kane and Abhishek will open the batting. They will be followed by Aiden at 3, Rahul at 4, Pooran at 5, Samad at 6 and Washington at 7. That’s our tentative top seven.”

- Abhishek Sharma was signed by Delhi Capitals in 2018 for INR 55 lakhs.
- The youngster smashed 46 runs in 19 deliveries in his IPL debut.
- After playing only three matches for Delhi, he was traded to Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2019.
- In the last three seasons, Sharma has played 19 matches for the Orange Army. He has scored 178 runs and has picked up 7 wickets for Hyderabad.
