IPL 2022: After CSK, Team India dealt Big Blow as Deepak Chahar out for 4 months, doubtful for T20 World Cup

“It’s absurd to understand how a player can have a secondary injury while recovering from another injury. The message is very clear to NCA. They have to sort out this mess as we have had a string of injuries and we can’t risk many with important events coming up,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.IN.

Deepak Chahar who was on course to recover from a quadriceps muscle injury had his back injury resurface while at the NCA. The back injury alone is expected to rule him out for four months, meaning he could miss the T20 World Cup in October.

The BCCI transferred Team India physio Nitin Patel to the NCA last month to head the Sports Science division on injury recovery. The board will hold a meeting with the NCA director VVS Laxman and Nitin Patel to understand what has gone wrong and how can such injuries be prevented.

“We will have a meeting with Nitin and VVS to find out why exactly we have so many injuries and we will decide the next course of action. But to tell you honestly, no one is happy with the situation,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.IN.

IPL 2022: Why is BCCI miffed with the NCA physios?

  • It started with Hardik Pandya’s mismanagement of injury.
  • Hardik’s back injury resurfaced and the all-rounder decided to treat it on his own rather than going through the NCA as he lost trust.
  • Ravindra Jadeja spent on the sidelines longer than expected after a broken thumb, prompting Sunil Gavaskar to question why was it taking so long.
  • Rohit Sharma’s frequent injuries too were not managed well by the NCA.
  • Suryakumar Yadav and Ruturaj Gaikwad also spent longer than usual while recovering from their respective injuries.

“Injuries are part and parcel of a player’s life but it is up to the NCA and the concerned teams to manage it. Hardik’s situation was unavoidable. But we have to set this straight. We are going to turn the NCA’s rehab department into a world-class setup with cutting-edge technologies so that injuries can be managed well. If needed, we won’t hesitate in bringing the best physios from other countries,” the BCCI official said.

It should be noted that in its new National Cricket Academy complex near Devanahalli in Bengaluru, a dedicated rehab facility will be set up. It will help all the domestic and international players to recover from injury without scrambling for options.
