IPL 2022 – Mega Auction, Mega Challenge: With the expansion of IPL 2022 and minimal retentions, franchises are planning for the next five years. The likes of Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders have taken a hit, losing their young talents. While many of them will be their targets in the auction again, their plan revolves around scouting talents who can come board for cheap and deliver.
“As we are allowed only four retentions, all of us will have to start from scratch as we don’t know if we can get the released players back in the auction. The BBL, LPL, Vijay Hazare are some of the platforms where young and unheard players showcase their talent. Hence, these tournaments are very important for us,” one of the scouts from a top IPL franchise told InsideSport.
IPL 2022 Mega Auctions: Why BBL 2021, Vijay Hazare 2021 and LPL 2021 are important for IPL?
- The T20 leagues have given young players the platform to showcase their talents.
- The likes of Riley Meredith, Jhye Richardson and Tim David have emerged from Big Bash League.
- BBL has been a breeding ground for fast bowlers. Apart from Meredith and Richardson, Ben Laughlin, D’Arcy Short have all come through the ranks of BBL.
- As for Vijay Hazare Trophy, Prithvi Shaw, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson all proved their worth with swashbuckling knocks to get recognition in IPL. RR’s Jaiswal is the best example. His double century in Vijay Hazare propelled him to get a Rs 2-crore contract from RR.
- With Wanininu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera amongst others gracing LPL 2021, IPL scouts have been paying close attention to LPL.

One of the IPL scouts told InsideSport that they have already spread to different locations to monitor the players’ performance.
“It will be a hectic month for sure. In between moving from a city to city for Hazare, some will be monitoring the players on TV. The Covid restrictions in Australia have definitely been a letdown but those who haven’t been able to go have been watching the BBL and LPL matches closely. You never know when you get another Ajanta Mendis or Chris Lynn,” the scout told InsideSport.
As for the IPL 2022 mega auctions, the dates are expected to be pushed by two weeks to January second week. The reason is the pending clearance for the CVC-backed Ahmedabad franchise.
