IPL 2022: “It’s a surprise” – Ahmedabad captain Hardik Pandya keeps cards close to his chest, remains tight lipped on bowling in IPL

In a chat with Cricbuzz, Hardik Pandya refrained from revealing whether he will be bowling in the IPL 2022. Recently signed on as Ahmedabad captain, Pandya’s fitness remains the biggest mystery with the new IPL 2022 franchise taking a gamble after Mumbai Indians opted against retaining the 28-year-old. When quizzed whether he will be bowling, Pandya responded, “It’s a surprise for everyone. My team knows where I stand”.

Hardik Pandya featured in the IPL last year as a pure batter, and started the T20 World Cup as one, before rolling his arm over in the later group stage games. Pandya has struggled with back and shoulder injuries which have restricted his ability to bowl over the last few years.

The Ahmedabad captain said that playing as a pure batter was challenging as he was always someone who contributes in all three departments of the game.  Pandya said, “It’s been challenging. I’ve always been someone who contributes with the bat, ball and on the field. When I decided I will just bat, I wanted to spend some time on the ground. We all love challenges and I love to fight it out. Criticism is good and it doesn’t really bother me. For me, results do matter but I work hard for the process.”

The former Mumbai Indians star added, “I’ve always realised that as an allrounder I give a lot of different options to the team. I’ll try to work on being an allrounder and if something doesn’t work out then my batting is always there. But Hardik Pandya combined with both bat and ball, it sounds better than just a batter.”

“I’ve always been a cricketer who plays situations and if I have to go certain places where my team needs certain goals from me, as a group we will decide. I have not made any plans regarding that,” he added further.
