IPL 2022: Who is the only Indian to make it to the list of Jayawardena’s dream T20 Team?
The MI coach has gone ahead with only one Indian in his top five picks. Jasprit Bumrah makes the cut because he believes the pacer is capable of bowling in different stages of the game.
“Jasprit Bumrah is a guy I have always admired as he is capable of bowling in different phases of an innings,” Jayawardena told ICC. “He is another wicket-taking option and, when you need guys to close an innings off, there is no one better than Jasprit Bumrah,” he added.

- Jayawardena has gone with Rashid Khan as his first pick because he believes he is an impact player with the ball in hand also quite handy with the bat in hand
- The MI coach also said bowlers are important players in the T20 format due to their ability to change the complexion of the game
- The legendary Sri Lankan cricketer further opined that the GT spinner can ball during the power play, death, and middle overs
- Hardik Pandya has used Rashid in the death overs and he has bowled at an economy rate of under 7
- Rashid has also chipped in with vital contributions lower down the order. He has scored 71 runs at an impressive strike of 197.22
“For me, the bowlers are the most important aspect of T20 cricket and Rashid Khan is a proper spinner that can bat. He is a very good number seven or number eight batter and you can use him in different circumstances depending on your combinations. He can also bowl in different phases of an innings like during the Powerplay, the middle overs, and also at the death, he is not a bad option depending on the conditions, so Rashid would be my first pick,” Jayawardena added.

Pakistan’s dynamic duo Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan & RR’s Jos Buttler are the other three picks of Jayawardena. The MI coach asserted that the trio are match-winners and can singlehandedly change the game within a blink of an eye.
Shaheen was named the ICC Cricketer of the year in 2021. He picked up a staggering 78 wickets in 36 matches across formats. Meanwhile, Rizwan won the ICC T20 player of the year award. He scored over 2000 T20 runs in one calender year and became the first player to do so.
Buttler has taken his T20 game to next level coming in as opener. He scored 214 runs during the T20I World Cup in 2021. The right-hand batter has continued his rich vein of form in IPL and has scored over 500 runs in 10 matches for RR.
