India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour has heaped praise on Rishabh Pant and believes clarity on his role and importance to the side have helped him excel at the international level. With Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid at the helm now, Pant is seen as a vital cog in the side and perhaps a future captain, having already acted as vice-captain in a few games for India.

Speaking to The Week, Rathour said, “He has suddenly grown up. Rohit and Dravid are in the saddle now, and he knows he is an important player in the India setup. He has now matured as a player. He is getting better and better, but there is still a long way to cover.”

“He will be a finisher at number five or six, he knows that. Nobody is pushing him to get a hundred in ODIs. He will always be an impact player and if he is consistently getting 40-50 and winning it for the team, then that is fine,” Rathour added.

Rishabh Pant has a lot of love for Rohit Sharma and the Delhi Capitals captain revealed that he sought out the Hit-Man for advice after hitting a low phase in his career. Pant was dropped from the Indian side after his struggles in all formats in 2019, before winning it back in the iconic Border Gavaskar series in Australia.

Speaking of his troubled times, Pant told The Week, “It was a hard time and I shut out everyone. It was difficult for me to go to many people. I only believed in myself; I wanted to prove myself to the world. I did not want to think negative thoughts. I was waiting for my chance. I was talking to Rohit [Sharma] bhai and Mahi bhai a little bit. But mostly I kept believing in myself. ”
