“The mega IPL Auction will take place on February 12-13th and we will lock in the venues before that. I am delighted to confirm that the 15th season of the IPL will start in the last week of March and will run until May end,” Jay Shah said in a statement.

IPL Auction VenueBengaluru to Mumbai? As InsideSport earlier reported, the BCCI is yet to finalise Bengaluru as the auction venue due to the alarming number of Covid cases in the city. The Indian board has kept Mumbai on standby for the February 12-13 auctions but is still confident that Bengaluru will be able to host the two-day event.

“Some things are out of our hands and we must wait. Bookings and stuff will not be an issue if we have an idea about the restrictions. We are closely monitoring the situation and are in talks with the state associations. If we need to move the venue, it can be done on short notice,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport earlier this month.

Meanwhile, BCCI confirmed that it will do everything possible to conduct IPL 2022 in India with the tournament starting in the last week of March until May. However, South Africa and UAE are still options if the Covid situation worsens in the country. A final decision will be taken on February 20.

“A majority of the team owners expressed their wish that the tournament be held in India. The BCCI was always keen on staging the 2022 edition that will see two new teams – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – in India. I can tell you that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the IPL stays in India. The BCCI has not compromised on the health and safety of its stakeholders in the past and will concurrently work on Plan B since the COVID-19 situation with new variants remains fluid,” Jay Shah said in a statement.

India is currently going through the third wave, forcing BCCI’s plans to derail. The Indian board had to postpone the Ranji Trophy, Cooch Behar Trophy amongst a host of domestic tournaments due to Covid cases. The BCCI doesn’t want to take a risk and see a repeat of the IPL 2021 postponement.
