PBKS IPL Auction LIVE: PBKS is still undecided on their captain. While Mayank Agarwal was named the captain in Rahul’s absence last season, the PBKS management isn’t too confident offering him a permanent captaincy role.
“We have lot of time left. There is no hurry to announce the captain yet. We will see how the auction goes and then take a call on the captaincy. Mayank is always an option but we will wait for the auction,” a PBKS official told InsideSport.IN.

KL Rahul took over the charge from R Ashwin in 2020 and led the team in 27 matches, winning just 11 matches. PBKS had two disappointing seasons during his tenure. But he continued to shine with the ba, top-scoring in both seasons and was the Orange Cap contender. However, the lack of on-field success forced him to seek a different challenge as he joined Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 17 Crore.
“KL has been the fulcrum for us in the last four years, and the last two years in the time that I have been with Punjab, he has been the captain. Obviously, we wanted to retain him and continue with him to be the focus for Punjab. But he decided that he wanted to go back to auction,” Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble said after the retention.

However, even though Punjab Kings will have the highest purse, they will have limited options for the captaincy job. David Warner, Eoin Morgan, Shreyas Iyer, Quinton de Kock, and Aaron Finch while Ishan Kishan is an option amongst young Indians.
With Rs 72 crore left in the purse, Punjab Kings are best-placed to land either of the big stars. But with Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore also in search of captains, it will be a tough bidding war between the three franchises.
“It all depends on how the auction goes. Even with a bigger purse than the rest, you can never be sure of how it will work out. It will be a matter of strategy and competing with others. We have a shortlist of captaincy candidates and we will see how it goes,” the PBKS official told InsideSport.
