10-team IPL returns for first time after 2011: IPL 2022 will see 10 teams clashing against each other for the first time after the 4th edition of the cash-rich league. CVC Capital won the bidding for Ahmedabad franchise, while RPSG Group spent a hefty Rs 7090 crore amount to claim the Lucknow franchise. The two teams will join the other eight franchises – Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
As per reports, KL Rahul is set to lead the Lucknow franchise, and Shreyas Iyer or David Warner could be seen leading the Ahmedabad unit.
2. New Format of IPL: BCCI is likely to go with the format used during the IPL 2021. The board confirmed that 74 matches will be played. This means a total of 70 league stage matches and 4 in the playoffs.
“The new franchises will participate in IPL from 2022 season onwards subject to the bidders completing the post-bid formalities as specified in the ITT document. The IPL 2022 season will comprise ten teams and will have 74 matches, wherein each team will play 7 home and 7 away matches,” the BCCI confirmed in October.
- Teams to be randomly divided in group of five teams each
- A team plays four other teams in the group twice, four teams in the other group once and one team from the other team twice (8+4+2= 14 League Matches)
- Teams in different groups facing each other twice to be decided by a draw
- The playoffs similar to the traditional format. Top two teams from groups play in Qualifier 1, second ranked teams in Eliminator, and the loser of the Qualifier 1 facing the losing team of Eliminator in Qualifier 2. The final follows.
3. Will fans witness Last Mega Auction? The upcoming mega-auction on February 12 and 13 could most likely be the last of it’s kind. Only four players were allowed to be retained by the existing team ahead of the auction. Teams were directed to hold players in two combinations – two Indian players and two overseas players or three Indian players and one overseas player.
Franchises are of the belief that the trend has clearly gone past its sell-by date, and are not in favour of losing their players whom they have nurtured over the years, in bunch.
Delhi Capiatals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal has gone on record to request IPL to do away with the auctions.
“The auction process is like this. Going forward, the IPL needs to look at it because it is not fair that you build up a team, give youngsters a chance, groom them and they get opportunities for the franchises and play for their country and then you lose them after three years. IPL needs to have a relook,” he had said after having to release R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada.
4. IPL will take place in India or Outside? With the growing cases of the Covid-19 omicron variant, it remains to be seen if a full-fledged IPL will return to India. BCCI took the step of organising the IPL 2021 in India but had to shift the venue to UAE midway after Covid-19 outbreak in India and the team bio-bubbles.
5. IPL Media Rights Tender: “The IPL Media Rights tender for the cycle 2023-2027 will be released immediately after the appointment of two new IPL teams which is scheduled to be announced on 25th October 2021,” the BCCI had said in a media release on September 28.
However, the tender which can fetch over 40,000 crore is yet to be released.
Star, Sony-Zee and an upcoming channel from Reliance Viacom 18 are expected to bid fiercely to get the rights to broadcast world’s biggest T20 league for the next five years. Very recently Amazon Prime Video also forayed into live cricket streaming and can throw their hat in the ring.
