David Warner has proved his “might with right” that may give the bowlers in the upcoming Indian Premier League some headache.
SunRisers Hyderabad will be a charged up lot to see their marquee star slamming the bowlers out of the park even when batting right handed. Shamed, suspended and waiting to don Australia’s baggy green after serving the one-year penalty term for his role in the ball-tampering incident on the Kangaroos’ tour of South Africa last year, Warner delighted the Bangladesh Premier League fans with his master class, switching to the right hand when the natural “left” did not work for him.
It was no child’s play. Warner was up against one of the most competitive professional cricketers Chris Gayle. When the mighty Caribbean didn’t allow Warner liberty to strike off his part-time off-spin, the stocky Aussie switched to the right and slammed Gayle for 14 runs off the over. Batting at first drop, Warner had blasted his way to 45 from 29 deliveries with two overs remaining in the innings. Then, after back-to-back dot balls from Gayle, he dared to bat right-handed for the next three deliveries of the 19th over. He despatched each past the bounder, with landing beyond the ropes. The 14-run explosion saw Warner finish with an awe-inspiring 61 not out.
The ₹12.5 crore SunRisers Hyderabad star acquisition was to lead the team in the IPL 2018. However, he had to make an unceremonious exit after Cricket Australia had banned him for one-year over the ball-tampering controversy in South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had decided to not to allow the Australian vice-captain along with his shamed skipper Steven Smith to play the IPL during the term of their suspension.
Cricket Australia had banned Steve Smith and David Warner for one year and handed a nine-month suspension to bowler Cameron Bancroft.
Warner now will be back to represent SRH in the IPL 2019.
