Indian table tennis pair achieves unprecedented feat at World Youth Championships

Jennifer Varghese and Divyanshi Bhowmick won the silver medal at the ITTF World Youth Championships 2023, India’s first ever.

The Indian doubles pair of Jennifer Varghese and Divyanshi Bhowmick created history of sorts after they secured a silver medal in the U-15 girls’ event at the World Youth TT Championships late on Saturday. The Indian girls fell to only to the Japanese pair of Yuna Ojio and Mao Takamori Nova Gorica, Slovenia.

The silver medalists, Jennifer and Divyanshi lost the match 1-3 (5-11, 11-8, 4-11, 2-11). Meanwhile, in the semis, the pair had beaten the French-Chinese team of Leana Hochart and Nina Guo Zheng 3-0 (14-12, 11-9, 11-8). Not just that, this was Jennifer’s second medal of the World Youth TT Championships, as she had won a bronze medal in the U-15 mixed doubles event as well.

As far as the U-19 category is concerned, the Indian team had won a bronze medal in the girls team event.

After the semis on Friday, the team revealed how they exactly felt. They said that the medal win will take some time to digest. “We both are feeling good, but we are not able to digest it because we never expected to play the finals together. We didn’t really think that we could win 3-0 in the semis,” Jennifer & Divyanshi said.
