Indian Cricket Team – BCCI Review Meeting: For players considering the IPL performances as the ticket to the national cricket team, there is some bad news in store. The BCCI will dictate to the national selectors that they should not consider one great IPL season as an entry point to playing for India. The decision came after the review meeting conducted by the BCCI on New Year’s Day. The board also wants the players to back up their IPL performances with powerful domestic outings and earn national selection. Follow IPL 2023 LIVE & IND vs SL LIVE Updates with Insidesport.IN

Players Selected on BACK of Single Season IPL Performance

Between 2021 and 2022, several cricketers went on to play for India after an excellent IPL season. However, their national performances were no match to their IPL exploits and had to be shown the door sooner than expected.

Some prominent names that emerges are Rahul Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube, Devdutt Padikkal, Venkatesh Iyer and Avesh Khan.

Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy were a part of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, but are no where in the picture now. Only few players like Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Hooda have managed to put up a string of performances at the international level.

On the contrary players like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad have not only performed well in the IPL, but also showed tremendous consistency in the domestic circuit as well.

Suryakumar Yadav has went on to not only establish himself as a top class T20 batter, but emerged as the highest run-getter in the format last year. Gaikwad has been included in the T20 series against Sri Lanka on the back of some excellent showing in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The decisions have been taken as a roadmap for the 50-over World Cup at home later this year. The BCCI’s review meeting involved President Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

The BCCI has shortlisted 20 players who will be rotated till the 50 overs ICC World Cup,” Shah said at the end of the meeting.

This however doesn’t mean that the door is closed for the players outside the shortlisted 20 players. Shah also said that those outside the pool of 20 will remain in contention since exceptional domestic performances can open the World Cup for them.

In the past, the BCCI has been criticised for not giving due importance to domestic performances. The prime example being Sarfaraz Khan, who ended the Ranji trophy 2019-20 season as the top run-getter with 982 runs at an average of 122.75. Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa openly criticised the national selectors decision to not include Sarfaraz in the national team last October.

Domestic performances were given due consideration prior to the introduction of the IPL. However, as time passed, so did the national team selection. The BCCI wants to set the record straight in 2023 after the national team’s poor performance in ICC events and with the 50-over World Cup at home. National selection must be earned through consistent domestic performance rather than one spectacular IPL season. The sooner the players adapt to this rule, the better it will be for them and the selectors.
