India vs South Africa Series: Mayank Agarwal’s bonfire night: The Indian cricket team landed in South Africa on Thursday for a 3-Test and 3-ODI series and players have just started to settle down at the scenic team hotel in Centurion. The likes of Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, and Shreyas Iyer have already shared pictures and visuals of the breathtaking property named Irene Country Lodge. 

India vs South Africa Series:  The lodge has hosted two successful bio-bubbles amid massive Covid-19 waves on behalf of Cricket SA. Last year in December and January, host South Africa and Sri Lankan stayed at the hotel. In April-May this year, South Africa and Pakistan were hosted at the hotel.

The Indian team will be based at the hotel for the Boxing Day Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Virat Kohli’s team will stay put at the same hotel for the New Year’s Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg before moving to Cape Town.

Only one-day quarantine for Team India in South Africa

Despite fear of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19, the Indian players will be spending just one day in hotel quarantine. The 18-man squad will undergo Covid-19 testing after arriving at the hotel and will be released from quarantine once the negative results are out.

“Team India will quarantine upon arrival and will be released following the results of the arrival COVID-19 tests that will take place when the team arrives at their hotel. As long as it takes for the arrival Covid-19 test results to come out. No longer than a day,” a CSA spokesperson had told InsideSport on Tuesday.

With Omicron Covid-19 cases on the surge, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has laid out strict guidelines to make sure the players and the tour is not at risk.

CSA’s strict instructions & guidelines for the hotel
  • No outside guest allowed in the hotel
  • The staff involved are already quarantining at the hotel
  • Regular testing is being done for the staff
  • Everything that comes on to the property is thoroughly checked to ensure that all the health and safety requirements are met
  • The hotel has been zoned off into various sectors to ensure that there is no contamination.
  • Covid-19 compliance officers are appointed at the hotel

India Tour of South-Africa – India vs South-Africa: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has already lost 4 T20I matches owing to the threat of Omicron. India team has agreed to tour but the local government is yet to give permission for the fans in stadiums.

India vs South Africa Series:  That means CSA is set to lose even Ticket sales revenues for the series. CSA now has literally pleaded with the local government to allow fans but are yet to get any response.

Acting chief executive officer of Cricket South Africa Pholetsi Moseki says the governing body are still hopeful of welcoming some fans back in the upcoming series against India.

“The issue of fans is something that’s on our agenda and once we’re done with the meeting, we’ll make a call from there,” Moseki said this week.

“There are a few people we need to speak to before we can make an announcement but we hope we’ll be able to make an announcement by the end of the day.”

CSA is hoping that government will relent & at least allow vaccinated fans to the stadiums.
