India tour of NZ: After their T20 World Cup debacle, India are all set to hit a rest in T20Is with fresh faces expected in the shortest format of the game. Hardik Pandya is earmarked as the new skipper, with a next gen side set to tour NewZealand for three T20Is. Sanju Samson is amongst the list of players who will have a chance to make their mark, having missed out on the squads for the Asia Cup and the T20 WC. “No doubt, Sanju is a great talent and he is in our scheme of things. If he and Ishan get more runs than Rishabh, nobody can bench them forever. But they have to utilise the chances,” a member of the selection committee told Insidesport.IN

Sanju Samson will return to the Indian team for the series against New Zealand with the Kerala born superstar being presented with another chance to make his mark. In 2022, Samson scored 179 runs in just five innings at a stunning strike-rate of 158.40. In the ODIs, he has manged 248 runs in 9 innings this year, at a mammoth average of 82.66.

The New Zealand series presents Samson an opportunity to cast the disappointment aside and set down his marker. With Dinesh Karthik being moved out and Rishabh Pant struggling, Samson could very well cast his die for a permanent spot in the side. Samson’s quality is unquestionable and the selectors will discuss his roadmap with captain Rohit Sharma and head coach KL Rahul.

“No doubt, Sanju is a great talent and he is in our scheme of things. We always knew Karthik would be a short-term solution. Once we meet with Rohit and Rahul, we will discuss roles within the team. That is something that was lacking with Rishabh. It’s now up to Sanju. If he and Ishan get more runs than Rishabh, nobody can bench them forever. But they have to utilise the chances,” a member of the selection committee told Insidesport.IN

India tour of NZ: Golden opportunity for Sanju Samson

  • The Rajasthan Royals captain also enjoyed his career best IPL season, scoring 484 runs in IPL 2022.
  • The NZ series marks an opportunity for the Kerala born star to set his marker.
  • With Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik struggling, Samson could all but make his place permanent.

The Rajasthan Royals captain made his India debut in 2014 but it was only last year that the Kerala born batter was presented with a consistent chance in the international circuit. Samson was however brushed aside when the seniors returned, losing out on the wicket-keeper’s spot to Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant.

Samson impressed against Ireland and West Indies, while also putting in a good show against SouthAfrica in the home ODI series. The 28-year-old will now hope to continue his purple patch and overturn in his forutnes in NewZealand, where he has previously scored 10 runs in two innings.  The Kerala born superstar will be one of the players considered in India’s T20 reboot ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup and he will be keen to set his marker.
