India Squad Australia Series: With the T20 World Cup squad submission deadline approaching fast, Mohammad Shami could earn a surprise recall depending on the injury status of fellow fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
“There is no decision to make until we have a clear idea on Bumrah’s recovery timeframe. He will be back at NCA this week for an injury assessment. Once we have a clear idea, we can take a call on whether we need an experienced pacer for T20 World Cup,” a selection committee member told InsideSport.
While there is a positive update on Harshal Patel’s recovery, it is unknown when Bumrah will be back on the field as the selectors gather to name the Indian team in a week’s time.
- Shami has been part of India’s last three World Cup campaigns but has hardly played the shortest format for India.
- Shami has only played 19 games since his debut in 2013.
- The 32-year-old, however, has been impressive in the IPL over the years and was one of the key reasons behind Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans’ win the title.
However, no return will be straightforward for the veteran India pacer with the host of competition in the ranks. Deepak Chahar has also recently recovered from injury and was called up to the Asia Cup squad as a replacement for Avesh Khan.
The CSK pacer has the ability to bowl with the new ball and can also add batting depth to the ranks.

Shami however could be the ideal player for Australian surfaces in Bumrah’s absence. His experience and hit the deck style perfectly suiting the conditions on offer. However, any news on the same will be taken after Bumrah’s assessment, with the Indian talisman expected to return to the NCA this week for the same.
The likes of Australia, England and South Africa have all announced their squads for the mega event next month. BCCI meanwhile are taking the wait-and-watch approach with a number of players out injured. Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled of the tournament after right knee surgery, while Harshal and Bumrah are also working their way back into full fitness.

The squad announcement is thus expected after the Asia Cup final on September 11. At the same meeting, India will pick the squads for Australia and South Africa series besides a three-match ODI series against South Africa.
