IND NZ Selection Meeting:

  • Selectors will have a call with NCA chief VVS Laxman on Ravindra Jadeja’s injury.
  • Jadeja is set to return if he gets the green signal from NCA.
  • Selectors will pick the ODI and T20 squad for NewZealand series starting January 18.
  • Selectors will discuss whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should play T20s.
  • It is unlikely that any senior player will be considered for the T20 series against NZ.

The selectors will be on Ranji Trophy duty from January 10. Before that, the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee will convene in Mumbai.

“They will have the selection meeting most likely on Monday or between Ranji. Of course, squad selection is the most important discussion. But as Chetan is continuing, he knows about the plans in and out,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

India Squad NZ ODI Series: BCCI and the selectors already have a shortlist of players for the ODI World Cup 2023. All core players will be available. Selectors will have a call with NCA director VVS Laxman on Ravindra Jadeja’s injury and take a call on his inclusion. Jadeja’s recovery has been rather slower than expected. However, if everything goes well, he will return for the ODI series against Kiwis.

Other than that, the players from ODI squad for SriLanka series will feature in the ODIs against NewZealand.

India Squad NZ T20 Series: Right after the ongoing series vs SriLanka, India will play 3-match ODI & T20 Series vs NewZealand. Rohit, Virat will play the Kiwis in ODI Series but won’t be part of the T20 Series starting from January 27. Even Shubman Gill is unlikely for the T20 series. As India will play the Test series against Australia starting February 9, he is likely to be rested.

InsideSport understands that both Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli besides Ravichandra Ashwin and Mohammad Shami will not be considered for T20s. KL Rahul is also unlikely for the T20 team. Instead, domestic performance will be rewarded. Sanju Samson is also unlikely having suffered a knee injury. But as the T20 series takes place after ODIs, he can still recover in time. The injury is not of serious nature.

Like the core group in ODIs, BCCI wants to create a core group for the T20 team and only make addition and substractions based on the demand of the squad. Hence, the squad for the SriLanka T20s will play the T20s against NZ.

“Every team has a short-term and long-term plan. ODI World Cup is our short-term plan. T20 WC is of course the long-term plan. The cycle has already begun. But we won’t get as many T20s this year to keep preparing for the WC. Instead, we have to look for opportunities where we can to prepare the team. If you look at the current squad, it’s the right mix. We only need experience in bowling. In two years, they will get there,” the official said.
