Reunion of the KulCha duo?

But a reunion of KulCha duo could be on the cards. Even though Deepak Hooda did decently on his ODI debut and provided the depth in batting, Rohit Sharma promised experiments. The selectors have been looking at wrist-spin options again after finger spinners didn’t impress in the ODI formats.

After Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal, both made an impressive start to the tournament, both will keep their places, leaving Deepak Hooda the only choice to be dropped if the left-arm spinner is to be slotted in.

Owing to an injury, Yadav has not featured in ODIs for the men in blue for nearly six months. His form has not been great as well, but 107 wickets in 65 ODI matches prove that on his day, the left-arm wrist-spinner can be absolutely deadly. If he is to be given a chance in the 2nd ODI, which will be played on 9th February, Hooda might have to sit out. Sharma has also said that he has plans of playing Chahal and Yadav at some stage.

With next year being the year of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, the Indian team management might chop and change their playing XI to see which combination works the best. While Deepak Hooda certainly passed his first test, it might now be the time for Kuldeep Yadav to have a shot at nailing his place in the team.

Where does Deepak Chahar fit in?

Deepak Chahar is the other option to be looked at. He had an impressive outing in South Africa and showed glimpses of big things to come. Prasidh Krishna did well, scalping two wickets for 29 runs in his 10 overs. The other designated all-rounder Shardul Thakur did not have a good time with the ball, conceding 38 runs in 7 overs.

As Rahul Dravid wanted to give a longer rope to Deepak Chahar as an all-rounder, he is still part of the plans. But it is unlikely that Rohit Sharma will want to change the winning combination. That means, the superstar of the South Africa tour, will once again be benched.

Having secured a crucial lead, it now remains to be seen whether Sharma sticks to the same playing XI or carries out a few experiments. In the post-match press conference, the 34-year-old said, “I’m open to a lot of things if we need to change. The end goal is we should be able to achieve what the team wants – whether we want to bat or bowl differently. Honestly, I don’t think we need to change a whole lot. All I will ask of the players is to challenge yourself and be innovative.”
