Karthik is struggling to make amends with the bat T20 WC:
- Karthik has managed to score just 14 runs in four T20 WC games.
- He made only one run against Pakistan before getting stumped out.
- Karthik did not get the chance to bat against the Netherlands with Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. remaining unbeaten after stroking their respective fifties.
- The wicketkeeper-batter struggled for his six runs off 15 balls against South Africa before Wayne Parnell ended his misery.
- Karthik looked in good touch against Bangladesh in the last match before getting run out on his personal score of seven.

Pant yet to get a game in T20 WC: Despite Karthik struggling with the bat, the Indian team management has not given a chance to Pant to show his batting skills at the big event. Speaking about his T20I numbers, the left-handed batter has played 62 matches and has amassed 961 runs at a decent strike rate of 127.62. He has also stroked three fifties in the 20-over format.
Why should Pant replace Karthik in the Indian squad?
- Team India do not have a specialist left-handed batter in their top-order
- Pant can take the attack against Zimbabwe’s senior left-arm spinner Sean Williams.
- Pant can replace Hardik Pandya at the number 5 batting position to maintain a left-right batting combination in the middle overs.
- While Pant can be slotted at number 5 position, struggling Pandya can be given the finisher’s job to make his role more clear as a batter.
- In 2022, the left-handed batter has been playing at a strike rate of 136.84 in T20Is which might help India to dominate the proceedings with the bat in the middle-overs.
Is this Dinesh Karthik’s last tournament for India?
The ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia, in all likelihood, will be Dinesh Karthik’s last appearance in the format as the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee started the transition phase in the shortest version of the game, keeping the 2024 edition in the West Indies and USA in mind. Notably, Karthik, who played 28 T20Is in 2022 till the Bangladesh game, was ignored for the three games against New Zealand.
