“KL Rahul sustained an upper left hamstring strain during fielding in the 2nd ODI on 9th February 2022 while Axar has resumed the final stage of his rehabilitation after recently recovering from Covid-19. They will now head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further management of their injury,” BCCI said in a statement.

In their places, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda have been named replacements. Gaikwad, who rejoined the squad after completing his isolation following Covid-19 diagnosis will get an opportunity to impress. Deepak Hooda, who did well in his two outings for Team India in ODIs will hope to continue his fine run of form in T20s.

KL Rahul missed the 1st ODI as he took an extended break to attend his sister’s wedding. While Rahul returned for the 2nd ODI and scored 49 runs, he was omitted from the Playing XI from 3rd ODI. Skipper Rohit Sharma said the team wanted to rest him without divulging that the vice-captain had suffered an injury.
Axar Patel, who tested positive days before IPL 2021 and missed the opening few matches for Delhi Capitals, he tested positive for the virus once again. The first time, it took him more than 20 days to recover and was advised to undergo mandatory cardio therapy sessions. This time, despite double vaccinations, he has seemed to have suffered the adverse effects once again.
