  • ODI template to T20 World Cup- Not a lot we need to change, No need to panic. He shows a complete different mindset than KL Rahul.
  • KulCha- Rohit says Yuzvendra Chahal- Kuldeep Yadav pair in mind
  • Bio-Bubble & COVID-19- All three players Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad are recovering well from COVID.
  • Virat Kohli- He knows what is needed from him. I will continue from where he left like we have done as captain & VC in the past.
  • Ishan Kishan- He will open the innings against West Indies in 1st ODI. Mayank Agarwal is added to the squad but he is still in isolation.
  • Workload management- Travel is challenging during COVID times. It’s important to rotate players and keep players injury-free.
  • Test captaincy– Rohit Sharma remains tight-lipped on Test captaincy. He said let’s focus on ODI and T20Is at the moment.
  • Finisher- After MS Dhoni’s retirement, no players in the picture. Hardik Pandya and R Jadeja were there but we need more backups.

Who will open the innings?

“With COVID it is uncertain with what is going to happen. At the moment, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, and Shikhar Dhawan are in isolation. They are doing well. In the first ODI, Ishan Kishan would open with me, he is the only option as Mayank was added to the squad, he is in isolation as he came a bit late into the squad. He has not finished his quarantine so Ishan will open the innings unless there is an injury,” said Rohit.

What about ODI template to T20 World Cup?

“There is not a lot that we need to change, we just need to adapt to different situations of the game. We have played good ODI cricket over the course of the past few years, one series loss is not the reason for us to panic. South Africa series was a great learning curve for us in terms of we did not do collectively as a team,” said Rohit.

“It is always important that everyone comes together. Going forward, the role clarity of certain individuals is important in the squad. If we can talk to the individuals about it, then we can get what we want at a different points from different individuals,” he added.

“My thoughts are very straightforward, the series against South Africa is the only ODI series we have lost in the past few years. Our ODI percentage has been 70 plus if I am not wrong, maybe more. If there is a change we need to do in terms of how we approach the game, we will do that. It is not like you have to suddenly come and copy what other teams are doing,” said Rohit.

“Other teams are different and their setups are different. I am open to change in approach, we have had chats with individuals. But suddenly, we cannot change too many things. It is important for us to keep things simple. The way we have played in the past few years has been remarkable, the guys who are coming in now have not played ODI cricket much, it is crucial for us to give them a chance and we have the time to do that. Over the course of coming months, we will look to do things differently,” he added.

Will KulCha spin duo return in ODIs against West Indies?

“Kuldeep and Chahal have been great performers for us in the past and they have created an impact in those years whenever they have played together, in the middle they were left out because of the combination we wanted to get. It is certainly on my mind to get them back together, Kuldeep especially,” said Rohit.

“We want to get Kuldeep in slowly, we do not want him to be rushed. It is important to give him some time to come into his own groove, we do not want to put him in a situation where we are asking too much from him also. I think for us, it is important that we handle the situation carefully. Both these players are important. Chahal played in South Africa and Kuldeep has just gotten back into the squad. Kuldeep needs to play a lot of games to get his rhythm back and we understand that,” he added.

What are your thoughts on Bio-Bubble & COVID-19?

For every player it’s different, it usually takes 7-8 to recover. All three players are recovering well from COVID. I’ve asked every player to be ready for the opportunity.

Will India change their ODI game heading in the built-up to ODI World Cup 2023?

“When Virat was the captain, I was the vice-captain. I just have to take it from where he left. Everybody knows what is expected out of them, we want to continue with the same template. There is not much we need to change. It is just that adaptability and being open to different things is what we have spoken of. It is not like I have to come in and change things drastically,” said Rohit during a virtual press conference.

“I just have to take it from where he left and it is important guys understand the responsibilities. This is what I will focus on, giving them the clarity on what is expected out of them,” he added.

IND vs WI LIVE – Rohit Sharma’s Opening Partner? Rohit Sharma is beginning his full time captaincy innings with 1st ODI. But neither he will have Shikhar Dhawan on his side in the opening match, nor KL Rahul. Even Ruturaj Gaikwad is atleast indisposed for 1st game.

This means Rohit will open with just-drafted players Mayank Agarwal or Ishan Kishan.

Mayank Agarwal: The Karnataka star is in 3 day Quarantine which ends only on Sunday morning i.e the match day. If he is included in the XI, he will have to straightaway play a match without practice.

Ishan Kishan: The team management have also added Ishan Kishan to the main team. The left-hander is already training with the team, having been part of the bubble due to his involvement with the T20I team.

The buzz coming from the Indian camp is that Ishan Kishan is likely to get a go ahead as Rohit’s partner for the 1st game.

Deepak Hooda Set for Debut: With Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel not part of the team or not available – Deepak Hooda is set to make his DEBUT for India.

Hooda has been part of the Indian squad on two previous occasions but has never made his debut. Sunday is likely to be his BIG-DAY. An IPL veteran, Hooda’s ability to chip in with overs will be an asset with India having a dearth of part-time bowling options in the set-up.

Will Kulcha RETURN? The much-awaited return of Yazuvendra Chahal & Kuldeep Yadav in Indian lineup is also a possibility.

Virat Kohli to play under Rohit: The big highlight of the 1st ODI would be Kohli in XI purely as a batsman. With captaincy burden gone, fans will expect fireworks from Kohli.

Kohli hasn’t scored a century since the West Indies toured India back in 2019 and the 33-year-old will be itching together record straight.

Suryakumar Yadav should get a nod for the No.4 slot followed by Rishabh Pant.
