- 119: Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan stitched together a 119-run partnership for opening stand. This is India’s highest in last 12 months.
- 3: India’s top-3 batters scored half-centuries for the 1st time in 12 months.
- 6: This was India’s 6th consecutive win against West Indies. This is India’s 3rd longest winning streak against West Indies.
- The previous longest winning streak was 9 between 1983 and 1987. India also had a 7-match winning streak against Windies in ODIs between 1988-89.

India WestIndies 1st ODI Highlights – Chasing a target of 309, West Indies lost Shai Hope early with Mohammed Siraj providing the breakthrough. However, then on, West Indies made a brilliant comeback. Samarah Brooks and Kyle Mayers stitched together a 117-run partnership to take the attack to India. For India’s part, there were some loose bowling from Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna and Axar Patel.
But Shardul led India’s fightback with two wickets in two overs, removing both Brooks and Mayers. But unlike the last few series when West Indies lost wickets in bulk in the middle overs, it wasn’t the case in the 1st ODI at Queen’s Park Oval. Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran kept the pressure on Indian bowlers with a 51-run stand.
With Mohammed Siraj getting rid of Nicholas Pooran in the 36th over, India eyed an opportunity. That came soon when Yuzvendra Chahal removed Rovman Powell. But Brandon King, Akeal Hosein and Romario Shepherd had other ideas. King stitched together another fifty-run stand with Akeal Hosein before he was dismissed.

But Hosein and Shepherd gave India a major scare. Hosein anchored from one end while Shepherd attacked from the other. Shepherd kept charging on in the last three, hammering Siraj for 11 in the 48th and Prasidh for 12 in the 49th. The equation came down to 15 off Siraj’s last over. But unlike his poor IPL records, Siraj held on to his nerves, conceding 11 runs of the last over and kept Shepherd largely silent. With that, West Indies could only manage 305/6.
Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer were the stars for India with half-centuries. But India lost steam in the end and losing quick wickets meant, India were restricted to 308/7.
Sent to bat, India were off to a brilliant start with Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan pouncing on West Indies bowling attack from the word go. The two brought up 73 runs inside the powerplay (10 overs). For Shubman, he will be happy with the returns as he ended a two-year ODI exile and smashed a half-century on his comeback. The two added 119 runs for the opening wicket.

However, despite a brilliant run-out by Nicholas Pooran to send Gill back, India did not fumble. Dhawan brought up a 94-run stand with Shreyas Iyer to keep the scorecard ticking. But then, India lost quick wickets. Dhawan missed out on his 18th century, falling short by just three runs. Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav too departed soon.
Sanju Samson once again failed to capitalise on the opportunity and Hooda did not get a good run. India lost steam in the last 20 overs and that helped West Indies to restrict India to 308/7.
