Rohit Sharma will become India’s 35th Test captain when he walks out for the toss during the first of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The Tests series is part of the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. India is currently at the fifth spot in the table. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka tops the table, having played just a solitary 2-match Test series against West Indies and won it 2-0.
Sri Lanka has announced their squad, which will be led by their regular captain and opener, Dimuth Karunaratne. Dhananjaya de Silva will be his deputy and veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews makes his return to the squad.

- The first Test at Mohali will mark the 100th Test of former skipper Virat Kohli. He will become the 11th Indian to represent the country in 100 Tests.
- Veterans Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped from the Test squad due to their poor run of form in the last year. India has the option of replacing the duo with Hanuma Vihari, Shreyas Iyer or Shubman Gill.
- India has also dropped veteran wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha. KS Bharat has been named as the back-up wicket-keeper in the squad.

With the summer fast-approaching in India, dry and warm weather is expected in Mohali during the five days of the Test match. The forecast suggests the same with temperatures expected to be between 25 degrees and 28 degree Celsius.
