As mentioned above, Iyer was looking good his 28 runs. The right-handed batter also stroked five boundaries in 33 deliveries he faced. However, he played the wrong line on a very full-length delivery and got hit on the pads. The umpire had no hesitation in raising the finger. Iyer also challenged the decision, but the hawk eye confirmed that the ball would have gone on to clip part of leg stump.

Just like the second ODI, Iyer also got a decent start in the first match of the series. The right-handed batter stroked 28 runs off just 24 deliveries. However, he threw away his wickets after trying to clear the ropes against Dhananjaya de Silva.

In 2022, Iyer had amazing outing in the ODIs. He scored his maiden ODI hundred against South Africa and scored at a rapid pace quite prolifically against every opponent. The 28-year-old scored 724 runs in just 15 innings. However, he was failed to emulate his performance in 2023 so far.

Coming to the third ODI, head coach Rahul Dravid along with the team management might want to replace Iyer with Suryakumar Yadav. The No 1 T20 ranked batter has been patiently waiting for his chances in the 50-over format. Yadav played his last 50-over match against NewZealand in November 2022.

He heads into the ODI series after having smashed his 3rd T20I century — 51-ball 112 not out in the 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka on Sunday. However, the 32-year-old has not managed to be consistent in the ODI format, scoring 4 single-digit scores in his last 5 innings in the 50-over format.

  • Suryakumar will be itching to get an opportunity in the third ODI.
  • The batter will try to improve his records in the 50-over format.
  • Suryakumar has represented India in 16 ODI matches.
  • In those games, he has amassed 384 runs at a decent average of 32.
  • Just like in T20s, the right-handed batter does not let the bowlers settle. Yadav plays at a strike rate of  100.52.
  • He also has stroked two fifties in the 50-over format with 64 being his highest score.
