IND vs SL Series: Did Wriddhiman Saha ignore selectors advice on playing Ranji Trophy? Chetan Sharma says ‘He was asked to play Ranji Trophy’
Explaining his decision on senior wicket-keeper Saha failing to make the cut, the Chairman of selection committee Sharma said, “I can’t tell you on what grounds he has been dropped. That’s for selectors. All I can tell you is that he was told before and asked to play the Ranji trophy, which is the ladder for the Indian team. What we discussed between ourselves we can’t tell you.”
“Why he did not play Ranji, the state association CAB can tell you that. That is not my jurisdiction. As selectors, we wanted them to play. We are not looking at age. When there are youngsters sitting outside, we thought we shall give chance. For these two test matches. But it’s important to play Ranji. Else, how will we know if you are match-ready?” he added.

“We don’t give a lot of attention to age. But at a stage we start to think about it as selectors when youngsters are doing well,” Chetan Sharma further stated saying that the selection committee has ignored him for only two matches and rest the doors are open.
- Wriddhiman Saha had last scored a lone fifty against New Zealand in home Tests during 4 innings as Pant was rested.
- He has played 40 Tests and scored 1353 runs with three centuries and an average of less than 30 which became his undoing.
- He, however, had 104 dismissals behind stumps, 92 catches and 12 stumpings.
