Shardul Thakur shattered a plethora of records as he ran through the South African batting order on Day 2 of the IND vs SA 2nd test at the Wanderers. Thakur registered figures of 7/61, his maiden five-wicket haul which eventually turned out to be his best figures ever in first-class cricket. The Indian pacer’s spell was the best ever for an Indian bowler in South Africa and also the best in India vs South Africa matches.

Shardul Thakur’s teammate Ravichandran Ashwin previously held the record for the best figures by an Indian bowler against South Africa. The Indian spinner had bagged 7/66 in November 2015 in Nagpur, helping India to a 124-run win. Harbhajan Singh, a teammate of Thakur at Chennai Super Kings, held the record for the best figures by an Indian in South Africa when he took 7/120 in a drawn Test in Cape Town in January 2011.

The 30-year-old is also the first Indian fast bowler to take seven wickets in an innings in South Africa. Javagal Srinath held the record for the best figures by an Indian fast bowlers in South Africa when he took 6/76 in Port Elizabeth in November 2001. It is also the joint best figures by a bowler at the Wanderers, equalling Matthew Haoggard’s 7/61 back in 2001.
