Just for comparison, in the first T20, he scored a 56-ball 51. Though it was a slow innings, one needs to be aware that India were chasing a paltry score of 107. So, the criticism levlled against him was uncalled for. When it came to the game in Guwahati, the batter’s intent was visible.
He scored a four in the first ball he faced on Sunday. Rahul was comfortable against both the spinners and pacers, smashing them to different parts of the park.
He was at his menacing best against Wayne Parnell, who was hit for a six and four in the fourth over. From there on, there was no stopping the player, who looked in his element throughout his stay. Eventually he was out in the 11th over of the game for 56 runs.

However, this innings of his is a massive statement to his critics. In fact ever since his return the critics have been after him. He made a comeback from sports hernia injury in the Zimbabwe tour, and he did not fare well. Even in the Asia Cup, he was not at his element. Some even said that he should not be a part of the Indian World Cup squad. But, in the last T20 series against Australia and the ongoing one against South Africa, he has showed his class and ozzed in confidence.
More importantly, he has showed that has adapted to the new template of Indian cricket under Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid. India play an attacking brand of cricket, and Rahul at the top of the order play an important role in setting the platform.
The same was witnessed on Sunday. He laid the platform and the finishing touches were done by Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav to compile 237/3 in the first innings. All these are good signs for Team India head of the World Cup.
