Kagiso Rabada rested: South Africa have taken a massive call and decided to release Kagiso Rabada from their ODI squad ahead of the three-match series against India. Rabada, South Africa’s premier pace spearhead forms a vital part of the squad but will be absent in a bid to manage his workload.

The decision has been taken due to high workloads over a sustained period of time and the need for him to recover prior to the outbound Test series against New Zealand next month. “No replacement will be brought in for him as there is an extended squad in place in the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE), but George Linde has been retained from the Test team as an extra spin-bowling option for the series,” stated an official Cricket South Africa (CSA) release.

IND vs SA 1st ODI: Kagiso Rabada was the leading wicket-taker in the recently concluded Test series, scalping 20 wickets in South Africa’s 2-1 win. While the 26-year-old’s services will be missed, the proteas have stacked up options in the pace department with Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala and Wayne Parnell all part of the side along with two seam-bowling allrounders in Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo.

As for the series against the Kiwis, South Africa will travel to New Zealand for a two-match Test series, set to begin on February 17. The Proteas will have to enter a bio bubble for the series and hence resting Rabada could prove out to be a smart decision by the team management.
