Rahul was at finest mediocre when it comes to “on-your-feet-thinking”, one thing that is primary to the artwork of captaincy, and in addition did not look the half with the bat in a deflating 31-run defeat within the opening ODI the place India have been outplayed for the higher a part of the sport.

Who said what:

Sunil Gavaskar

“During that partnership, it did look as if he had run out of ideas. KL Rahul didn’t know where to go. when you have your two-most experienced death-overs bowlers in Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar, you have to keep them for the last 5-6 overs. So that’s where you can actually stop the opposition from running away with a big score. But these are early days of his captaincy and maybe things will turn around, let’s hope for Indian cricket’s sake that things turn around in the next couple of days,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

“Rahul doesn’t have much experience of captaincy. He has only captained Punjab Kings in the last two IPLs. Apart from that, in any format tournament – Ranji Trophy or List A. That’s why you need to have patience when you think of him as captain. Even if you look at his captaincy in IPL, Punjab Kings haven’t done anything on note in the last two years,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir

“One thing I would’ve wanted to see is attacking fielding placements. I expected a slip, gully, and gully point for Yuzvendra Chahal after Aiden Markram was dismissed. When Ashwin came in to bowl, you could’ve put a leg slip or short-leg in place. You don’t want to necessarily get the batsmen out; the point is that the bowler will only bowl according to the field set for him,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Dale Steyn

“If you look at KL, I don’t think he did anything wrong with his captaincy. But there were just those little differences, the little bit of planning that was the difference between India and the Proteas. South Africa were walking up to the bowlers, India stayed in their crease. It’s the little things KL is going to get better at,” Steyn said during the Byju’s Cricket Live Show after the match.

“He has got only 24 hours to turn this whole thing around. So today was a good day for them. They must have learnt from South Africa what they did right,” added Steyn.

  • South Africa crushed India both strategically as well as on skills and therein lay serious questions about Rahul’s wares as captain.
  • There wasn’t a singular inspired bowling change, unlike Proteas who introduced Aiden Markram’s off-breaks first-up and bottled up the Indian skipper.
  • Venkatesh Iyer remained unused despite 204 runs partnership between Temba Bavuma & Rassie van der Dussen.
  • Test captaincy is a distinct ball-game in comparison with the white ball however Rahul solely is aware of too nicely that relating to decision-making, the highest brass will fall again on references they’ve.
  • And a series defeat against South Africa isn’t going to do his case any good unless the head coach is bent on trying to make a leader out of him.
