“Avesh is feeling a little bit unwell, just been under the favour, a little bit of fever, doctors are managing the situation, he is not at practice today hopefully he is not too serious and should be okay for tomorrow’s game (against PAK), if not, then later part of the tournament,” head coach Rahul Dravid said in the pre-match press conference.
Avesh Khan struggled for form in the two games and doubts were already raised on his spot in the team. While he struck the wicket of Fakhar Zaman in the opener vs Pakistan, he bowled only two overs conceding 19 runs. In the game against Hong Kong, the Madhya Pradesh pacer was taken to the cleaners conceding 53 in his four overs.
With India naming a spin-heavy squad for the Asia Cup, Avesh’s unavailability means India will have to field an extra spinner in the side. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was on the bench for both group stage games would be the favourite to make it to the side. The veteran off-spinner can chip in with overs in the powerplay and is also a handy batsman down the order.
