Iyer on Thursday received his Test cap from former skipper and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and went on to score his maiden fifty. Coming to bat at number 5, Iyer carried his bat on Day 1 and played 75 runs knock that included 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Soon, India T20I skipper Rohit Sharma took to his Twitter account and lauded Iyer’s innings. “Good start to the test career,” Rohit tweeted.

Apart from Rohit Sharma, team India opener and Iyer’s Delhi Capitals’ teammate Shikhar Dhawan also took to his Twitter account to congratulate the debutant. “Congratulations on your Test debut and half-century @ShreyasIyer15 All the hard work you’ve put in has paid off bro,” Dhawan tweeted.

At stumps on Day 1, India’s score read 258/4 with Iyer (75*) and Jadeja (50*) currently unbeaten at the crease. Shubman Gill also managed to score 52 but he was dismissed by Jamieson on a peach of a delivery and that ended up castling his stumps.
Earlier, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared the video in which Gavaskar can be seen handing the Test cap to Iyer, while all other players congratulate the India batter.
