IND vs NZ LIVE: Rahul Dravid’s five-point agenda as India begin T20 World Cup 2022 preparations

1. Play fearless cricket

India have been guilty of being “timid” and “ODI-like” cricket in T20Is, something that was witnessed during their games at the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Rahul Dravid wants to assert confidence and faith in the players to take risks and play dynamic cricket, in what is a relentless format. The Indian coach wants to give the license to play fearlessly and Rohit Sharma said so in his press conference alongside Dravid ahead of the India vs New Zealand series.

“It’s important, especially in this format, that sometimes you just need to go out there and play fearlessly and while doing that, there are chances that you might not always be successful because it’s a short format and you’re always challenged. The pressure is always there. We certainly will keep an eye on that aspect, ” said Rohit Sharma.

2. Rotation, counter bio-bubble fatigue

Rahul Dravid has already showcased his hands-on approach, individually contacting every single player to ask them about their availability and whether they needed rest. The Indian team has played relentless cricket since June, with many players playing across all formats without much break. Dravid is keen to address the issue especially with the bio-bubble environment in place, and the likes of Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been afforded rest for the India vs New Zealand. The workload of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is also being managed leaving no room for mental or physical fatigue.

Dravid said, “Workload management has become a crucial part of the game now because so much cricket is played these days. Like we see in football also, seasons are so long and some of the top players don’t play all the games. So if we’re playing throughout the year then we have to be careful about players’ workload management.”

He added, “Whether we do it within the team or by giving them a break, that will depend on a case-by-case basis. But like I’ve said before, players’ mental and physical well-being will be most important, we will work in and around that, the team will also take priority. “

3. Having specialists for key roles

India have struggled to define the roles of some players in the playing XI, with many being given less than a handful chance to make their mark. However, going forward, Rahul Dravid is keen to plug all holes in the team and maximise what he has at his disposal.

Rohit Sharma addressed the same during the press conference, saying, “Template is a very important one and we need to set it right. There are holes in every team but you try and maximise what you have. I’m not going to say that we’re going to follow a certain team’s template. We have to create our own template, see what’s best and right for the team. We strictly want to assign roles that we want them to do because at the end of the day what they do here matters.”

4. Putting the team before individual

Rahul Dravid was always a team player during his playing days, and he expects the same from his team now that he dons his coaching hat. Such values have been imbibed in the Indian U-19 and A teams during his tenure, and there is an expectation for the same from the senior team. KL Rahul, who has worked under Dravid for a long time, said before the India vs New Zealand series that Dravid wants the squad to put the team above themselves.

KL Rahul said, “When it comes to coaching, I’ve played a couple of games with the India A set-up [under Dravid], and we’ve had a small chat just before coming out here for training, and he’s somebody who’s big on setting a good team culture and creating an atmosphere where people are thriving and trying to get better as people and as cricketers. He’s always been a team man when he was playing, and that’s the kind of culture he wants to bring in here as well, where everyone’s putting the team ahead of personal goals.”

5. Long term planning for team, player careers

Rahul Dravid aims to find the right balance between nurturing age group outfits and a ruthless senior outfit. The Indian team management have been guilty of not giving players a longer run of games in the past, and Dravid is keen to correct that and plan long term for the team and players’ careers.

The Indian coach said, “Thinking long term and thinking about what’s in the future certainly is my job as a coach, and that won’t change irrespective of whichever team you’re coaching. You know we will think about the players’ long term careers and futures as well and keep that in mind and not prioritise their well being at any stage over, for sort of short term results.”
