Mumbai-born Ajaz Patel wanted to make his return memorable. But not in his wildest dreams would he have thought of taking all 10 wickets against India. But that wild dream became a reality when Mohammed Siraj fell in the 110th over on Day 2 in India’s first innings to help the Kiwis bowl out the hosts for 325 in their first innings.

The left-arm spinner’s figures are the best by a New Zealand bowler, while he became the third to take ten wickets in an innings after Jim Laker and Indian bowling legend Anil Kumble.

Some 1000 miles away, Anil Kumble achieved the feat in 1999 against Pakistan and Jim Laker in 1956 in Manchester against Australia. The gaps in repeating the feat tell you how difficult it is to take all 10.
His feat was something that even prompted India’s ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to stand up and applaud from India’s dressing room even though he was one of the victims.

The other one to applaud was India coach Rahul Dravid, who witnessed teammate Anil Kumble’s feat in Delhi 22 years ago up close. Incidentally, he is the only player to witness the feat twice — once as a player and now as a coach.
