Axar Patel had a nightmare outing on Sunday and the left-arm spinner will be under pressure to keep his place in the side when the Indian team faces minnows Netherlands on Thursday. Touted as Ravindra Jadeja’s replacement, Patel struggled in his maiden T20 World Cup match with both bat and ball against Pakistan at the MCG.
With the ball, Axar bowled just a solitary over, where Iftikhar Ahmed took him to the cleaners with three huge sixes. The 21-run over shifted the momentum in Pakistan’s favour which eventually helped them post 159, which seemed unreachable at a point. Despite having the big boundary to his advantage, the 28-year-old failed to keep Iftikhar in check in a rather forgettable performance.
Axar’s evening went from bad to worse later after he was run out during India’s chase. Promoted ahead of the likes of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik, Patel had a mix-up with former captain Virat Kohli. He was caught out of his crease as India slipped to 31/4 just when the team needed to build a partnership.

With the Netherlands not expected to be much of a threat, India could very well experiment and Yuvzendra Chahal is one of the players awaiting an opportunity. Chahal has been in good form albeit a touch expensive, which saw him lose his place to Ravichandran Ashwin.
However, Ashwin also went wicketless and allowed a partnership to build between Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed in the middle overs. Rohit Sharma had to resort to 4 overs from Hardik Pandya and an over from Mohammad Shami to get the wickets, adding in favour of Chahal.
The wily leg-spinner is one of India’s leading wicket-takers in the format and is a good strike option in the middle and death overs. Yuzvendra Chahal has similar numbers as those of Axar Patel but with a better economy rate since 2022. The 32-year-old is also high on confidence having won the Purple Cap in the IPL 2022 earlier this year.
