Virat Kohli 2nd T20 – IND ENG 2ND T20 LIVE: Former India captain Virat Kohli is leaving no stone unturned as he makes a comeback to the T20 set-up after a rest of 5 months. In Kohli’s absence, the likes of Deepak Hooda and Shreyas Iyer have embraced the role in style and intent, raising questions about the 33-year-old’s place in the side.

The maverick chaser, Kohli has struggled for consistency over the last couple of years, with his strike rate also taking a big hit. His performance in the IPL 2022 was also average at best with supporters now running out of patience with the former World No.1 T20 batsman.
Former India captain Kapil Dev opined that the team management will have to make difficult decisions. Drawing a parallel with Ravi Ashwin’s omission for the entire England tour, he said, “Yes, now the situation is such that you might be forced to bench Kohli from T20 playing eleven. If world No. 2 bowler Ashwin can be dropped from Test side then (once upon a time) world No. 1 batter can also be dropped.”
The legendary skipper added that Virat Kohli looked like a shadow of his former self and with youngsters performing, the chances should be rightfully reserved for them.
He added, “Virat is not batting at a level which we have seen him do over the years. He has made a name because of his performances but if he isn’t performing, then you can’t keep the performing youngsters out of the team.”

Earlier, a BCCI official also hinted that Virat Kohli will have to perform or perish from the side.
“He has been a great servant of the Indian cricket. Without doubt one of the best. But his struggle for form and runs is now alarming. Selectors need to select people on form not on reputation. I am no authority but he needs to get his groove back soon. Perform or Perish has to be a way forward on him. I guess selectors will look for options before the T20 World Cup if he don’t get runs in England”, said one of the top BCCI official to InsideSport.
India at this stage have multiple options in Suryakumar Yadav, Pant, Pandya, Jadeja, Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. BCCI selectors feel Kohli can’t be given anymore rope. Hence, the England series will be crucial for the 33-year-old.
