Jasprit Bumrah continue his meteoric rise in international cricket and the fast bowler will now take up India’s captaincy for the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Rohit Sharma had tested positive for COVID-19 which put his availability in serious doubt, and Bumrah’s elevation to captaincy was confirmed on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was previously named standby after Rohit entered isolation and was confirmed as captain in a team meeting at Edgbaston. The decision was taken after Chairman of BCCI’s Selection Committee Chetan Sharma reached Birmingham. The Indian team coach Rahul Dravid had a discussion with Chetan and it was finally decided that Bumrah will lead India.

Bumrah will become the 35th player to lead India in Tests, and the fourth in the past 12 months to assume that role. He becomes the first fast bowler since the legendary Kapil Dev to be named captain of the side. The Haryana Hurricane led India in 34 tests from 1983-1987, winning 4, losing 7 and drawing 22 games in charge.
When Bumrah was previously asked about his feelings about potentially leading India in whites, he had said “If given an opportunity, it would be an honour. I don’t think any player would say no. There’s no bigger feeling than that.”
“I don’t like to chase things because I don’t want to. See I am a person who believes that God has a plan and everything will find out its own way, so I don’t like to hamper the plan that is there. I try to never change anything,” the pacer further added.
